Free Bible study : Sharing a Meal with Jesus

Jesus eats with sinners

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.(Luke 5:27-29)

Jesus was happy to share meals with others because, for him, the table was far more than a place to eat. It was a space for grace, welcome, and revelation. In the Gospels, we see him constantly gathering with people around food—disciples, tax collectors, Pharisees, and even strangers. Each meal became a window into the heart of God, showing that divine love is not distant or reserved for the few, but close, generous, and open to all.

In Jesus’ world, sharing a meal was a deeply meaningful act. To sit at someone’s table was to accept them, to acknowledge them as part of your community. That is why it shocked so many when Jesus chose to eat with those considered outcasts or sinners.

Meals also gave Jesus the opportunity to teach and to transform lives, and were moments of friendship and fellowship.

The free Bible study looks at four meals Jesus shared: with a tax collector, a crowd of people, a couple of disciples at Emmaus, and a group of them on a beach. There's a brief reflection on each and then lots of discussion questions for a group or individual
