Praying to God for Guidance

Asking God to reveal his purpose for our lives

We have a God who loves us, and has a plan and purpose for all our lives. It is understandable therefore that at times we feel the need to seek reassurance that we are following the right path on our journey of faith, as we seek to do God's will.

"he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake." (Psalm 23 :3)

" If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast." (Psalm 139:9-10)

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. " (John 16:13)

On the journey of faith be our guide,
a helping hand if the path is steep,
encouragement should our steps falter,
reassurance that beyond the clouds
the sun is shining and our destination
is more glorious than we can imagine.

Bless our children, Lord,
growing up into a future
that is difficult to predict.
Protect them, guide them
and give them wisdom
to see above and beyond
the tempting choices
this world may offer,
that they might become
the people who, in your eyes,
they were always meant to be.

Teach us your way, Lord,
when we are unsure
of which way to turn,
tiredness descends
and we’re hurting inside.
Teach us your way, Lord,
when we are anxious
and struggle to pray,
unsure of the words
that we’re wanting to say.
Teach us your way, Lord,
as we travel in faith
through uncertain times,
following your footsteps
with your word as our guide.
Teach us your way, Lord,
Teach us your way.

Guide us, gracious Lord,
as we make our way
through this week,
your feet revealing
safe paths to follow,
your calming voice
giving confidence
to continue, through
unfamiliar, challenging
and often beautiful places.

For all whose journey
has only just begun,
who tread carefully
and heavy laden
along unfamiliar paths,
seeking guidance
from fellow travellers,
fearful of losing their way,
speed their journey, Lord,
keep them from harm,
and bring them safely
into their promised land,
your Kingdom where,
at last unburdened,
they might find their rest in you.

When travelling is hard;
mountains to climb,
rivers to cross,
storms that assail,
and in our own strength
we know that we shall fail,
Lord, reach out your hand
to guide us safely,
and without stumbling,
toward our journey’s end.

As we journey together
in the footsteps of faith
may we never lose
our sense of direction,
keep eyes focussed
upon our destination,
drink from the well
and eat of the bread
that will bring us life,
and hold out our hand
to any who may falter
or stumble along the way.

All I am, and all I have,
I offer, Lord, to you.
I offer you these hands,
that you might use them
in and through my daily work.
I offer you these feet,
that you might lead them
to someone who needs my help.
I offer you these shoulders
if you should them
to help lighten another’s load.
I offer you this voice
that you might use it
to speak up for those in need.
All I am, and all I have,
I offer, Lord, to you.

When the journey
through each day
becomes a struggle,
and we wonder
how much further
there is to go,
your gentle voice
can still be heard:
‘Sit where you are,
for I am there,
rest once more
in my embrace.’
For your presence
along life’s road,
wherever we might be,
we thank you, Lord.

Your footsteps are not easy to follow,
for they lead not only to green pastures
where we find nourishment and rest,
but also desert and wilderness places
where we are vulnerable and alone,
and crowded and uncomfortable spaces
where we feel threatened and distressed.
Your footsteps are not easy to follow,
but you have walked this way before
and are never far from any one of us,
your Spirit guiding and instructing,
your arm supporting, your love supplying,
on this necessary path we tread.

Grant us the confidence, Lord
to step out in faith and become
the people we are meant to be,
unapologetic in our love for you,
wanting to be change-makers,
bringers of hope, love and grace
into an unbelieving world
that has no faith but in itself,
is almost blind and cannot see
that all it seeks is found in you.
Grant us the confidence, Lord
to step out in faith and become
the people we are meant to be.

Good Shepherd, guide us
when the way is uncertain
and the path overgrown,
back onto higher ground
from where we might see,
behind us, the place from which
you have patiently brought us,
and ahead of us once more
glimpse your footsteps
leading forward, into which
we will try and place our own.

Bless our feet
that they might tread
the path prepared.
Bless our hands
that they might show
your love’s embrace.
Bless our words
that they might share
your grace and peace.

God of the journey,
give sight to all
who have not found
the path to follow,
strength to those
who are walking
that you have trod,
and hope to those
growing weary
of the travelling,
that all might meet,
one glorious day,
at this journey’s end.
