Prayers for the Lectionary Year C

Praying through the Lectionary Year  C -  22nd in Ordinary

The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) offers a three-year cycle with four readings for every Sunday in the Church Year.

These readings are:
A Lesson from the Hebrew Scriptures (or Acts during the Season of Easter)
A Psalm
A Lesson from the Epistles or Acts
A Lesson from the Gospels

The following prayers follow a traditional form using the pattern of ACT (Adoration, Confession and Thanksgiving).

There is also an opening prayer which can be used at the beginning of a service.

Proper 17 (22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time)

Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive

Jeremiah 2:4-13; Psalm 81:1, 10-16; Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16; Luke 14:1, 7-14

OPENING PRAYER

Creator of all
we bring our offering of worship
for all that you have made for us.

Saviour of all
we bring our offering of worship
for all that you have done for us.

Spirit of all
we bring our offering of worship
for all that you reveal to us.

Three in One
we bring our offering of worship,
be the blessing among us now.

ADORATION

You are a faithful God,
when so often we fail you.
You are a forgiving God,
even when we deny you.
You are a patient God
when we stray far from you.
You are a welcoming God
as we come home to you.
Faithful and loving God
accept the praises that we bring
the offering of our hearts
and the service of our lives,
that we might faithfully
show your love
wherever we might go
as together we continue
on our journeying with you.

CONFESSION

You call us
and we ignore your whisper,
listening to the voices of this world.
You call us
and we choose a different path,
following our own devices.
You call us
to be your voice in this world,
to be your hands in this world,
to be your feet in this world,
to proclaim your peace,
your comfort,
forgiveness,
healing,
love
and grace.
Forgive us,
open our ears,
call us again,
and use us.

THANKSGIVING

What a privilege to serve,
to share your love
through word and deed.
What a joy to know
that what we say
can bring such peace.
What a blessing to see
hearts touched
by the riches of your Grace.
What a harvest to be
when seeds we sow
produce fruitfulness.
Thank you, gracious God!
